Well done Anna Bøthun and Mehal Rathore and Peter Reddingius!

ESR Mehal Rathore and Peter Reddingius of CITY University Londen together published an article in TVST

In the paper, they validated the use of smartglasses "Eyecatcher 3.0" in both normally sighted adults and glaucoma patients. Their results concluded that smart glasses were a feasible means of monitoring in our cohort, with clinical results comparable to the clinical visual field analysis and were acceptable to patients. ESR Anna Bøthun of Rigshospitalet Copenhagen published an article in BMC Ophthalmology

In the paper, they investigated the frequency and associated factors of preoperative visual field defects in pediatric brain tumor patients. They showed that visual field defects are common in children with brain tumors but may go undetected due lack of symptoms, findings, unreliable testing methods, or poor general health. Last week, we held our 7th and final OptiVisT Workshop, brilliantly organized by our consortium members from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam — and what an incredible job they did! ��

The workshop was packed with highlights, including:
✨ ESRs presenting the outstanding work they've accomplished over the past three years.
✨ A fun and competitive Goalball play.
✨ Engaging talks on peer-review processes, sharing "favorite mistakes" in science, and insightful discussions on follow-up grants.
✨ A business pitch by the OptoCure team.
✨ An inspiring presentation by a Paralympic athlete.
✨ The iBBA symposium: "Gaze behaviour in daily life: functional, social, and clinical perspectives."
✨ And, last but not least: the PhD defence of our first OptiVisT ESR! Huge congratulations to Dr. Andrea Ghiani on this amazing achievement! ��

Thank you all for making this event a success and for your incredible contributions throughout the program. Though this was our last official workshop, let’s promise that this isn’t goodbye but just the start of many future collaborations. ��

OptiVisT TRAINING EVENT 7 - AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS

The final Optivist training event, held from November 25 to 28, 2024 in Amsterdam (NL), marked a significant milestone in the network’s journey. The ESRs presented their entire PhD projects in a series of insightful and engaging sessions, showcasing the depth and breadth of their research.

Monday 25/11

The event kicked off with a warm welcome from training event hosts David Mann and Eli Brenner, followed by a series of ESR presentations. Each researcher presented their entire PhD project in 15-minute sessions, offering a comprehensive view of their work, followed by a 5-minute Q&A. After the morning's presentations, attendees engaged in EU reporting activities, updating necessary documents and working on deliverables.

In the afternoon, participants listened to a Business Plan pitch by the OptoCure team and took part in a social event with Goalball, a team sport designed specifically for athletes with a vision impairment.

Tuesday 26/11

The second day featured more PhD project presentations from ESRs, and the Junior and Supervisory Board meetings also took place.

In the afternoon, the consortium members engaged in fruitful discussions on future networks and grants.

Wednesday 27/11

Wednesday began with Andrea’s PhD defense [ESR3], followed by a reception to celebrate the occasion. The afternoon focused on the iBBA Symposium, which explored gaze behavior in daily life, featuring talks from prominent researchers in the field.

Thursday 28/11

The final day featured sessions aimed at enhancing career skills, including a panel on how to review and handle scientific reviews, and a presentation by a Paralympic athlete, offering inspiring insights into overcoming challenges. ESRs also participated in the much-anticipated Three-Minute Thesis challenge, showcasing their ability to condense their research into a 3-minute pitch. The event concluded with a closing drink, marking the end of the 3-years OptiVisT training series.

ESR Dilce Tanriverdi publihed an article in TVST

ESR Dilce Tanriverdi and PI Frans Cornelissen (UMCG) examined visual crowding in individuals with preperimetric glaucoma and compared the potential effectiveness of eye movement–based and manual response paradigms. They concluded that patients with preperimetric glaucoma demonstrate heightened binocular visual crowding. This was most effectively demonstrated via the 2AFC manual response paradigm. The data for this study was collected during her secondment at the lab of prof. Michael Hoffmann of the Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg.

Dissemination conference and training evaluation

OptiVist's Functional Vision Conference ‘Understanding and Enhancing Functional Vision in Everyday Life’ took place on August 23, 2024, in Aberdeen, Scotland. The event served as a dissemination conference for the Innovative Training Network OptiVisT and was organised as a satellite event to the European Conference on Visual Perception (25-29th August) also in Aberdeen. It's main goal was to present OptiVisTs’ latest scientific insights into functional vision and how these insights could be translated towards solutions and applications for visual impairment and rehabilitation. During the conference, the PIs presented the work of their ESRs within the context of other research conducted in their lab. This facilitated connections between the work of different ESRs, when applicable, and with others. The network’s ESRs present their best and favourite work on posters. In addition to network presentations the program included three keynote speakers, who are experts in the field of functional vision were invited to give a longer talk. Additionally, during the poster session, several invited researchers in the field of vision research shared insights into their current work. OptiVisT TRAINING EVENT 5 - OSNABRUCK, GERMANY

From February 25 to 28, 2024, the Optivist network gathered in Osnabrück, Germany, for an engaging training event filled with scientific exchanges, hands-on demonstrations, and business training.

Sunday 25/2

The event kicked off with an optional guided city tour led by a historical night watchman, followed by a relaxed networking dinner at Rampendahl Brewery. This informal gathering set the stage for productive discussions in the days ahead.

Monday 26/03

The consortium met at Bohnenkamphaus in the picturesque Botanical Garden. The morning was dedicated to poster presentations, where ESRs showcased their research progress. Lively discussions followed, focusing on key findings, interdisciplinary connections, and future directions. A lecture by Feng Wang from the University of Amsterdam concluded the academic sessions.

Tuesday 27/02

Day two centered on real-world applications of research. The feelSpace team demonstrated innovative technologies like the tactile bracelet for the visually impaired and the NaviBelt navigation aid. Attendees engaged in hands-on testing, gaining insights into the transition from scientific discovery to practical use.

Later, the feelSpace team shared their experiences in bringing research-based products to market, highlighting the challenges of commercialization. The day ended with a compelling public lecture at Osnabrück Schloss Aula by Michael Hoffmann on eye diseases and brain research.

Wednesday 28/02

The final day was dedicated to business training and technology transfer. Business coach Nadine Schmieder-Galfe led an interactive session on identifying commercial potential in research and intellectual property strategies. ESRs pitched their business ideas, receiving valuable feedback on market applications.

Furthermore, the "Next Steps" consortium provided real-world examples of research translation, with discussions on Parkinson’s research, digital health monitoring, and virtual reality applications. These sessions underscored the importance of connecting scientific innovation with industry and patient needs.

ESR Jannet Philip published her first OptiVisT paper on subtype classification in childhood cerebral visual impairment

In this paper, Jannet Philip and her colleagues (Royal Dutch Visio and Radboud Univeristy Nijmegen) studied how to classify Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) subtypes in children and assessed the added value of an extensive test battery over a limited test battery.

OptiVisT ESRs host a research symposium

The Crabb lab Research Symposium

:ESRs Mehal Rathore (ESR 9) and Peter Reddingius (ESR 11) co-organized a symposium in London on 25th July 2023, hosted at the City University of London in the Northampton Suite. Vision science researchers from Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge) and Oxford Eye Hospital were invited to share their research. ESRs Anna Bøthun (ESR 15) and Marcin Furtak (ESR 10) attended the event as well. Anna spoke about “What can eye movements tell us about the visual fields in children?”. The event was attended by about 25 people from all the invited institutions. Surrounding the talks, there was ample time for the attendees to engage in networking. The topics ranged from public eye health to new technology in eye care and diagnostics. The day was filled with talks, a networking lunch, and a drinks reception at the end.

Organized to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute , the Conference on Functional Vision and Accessiblity hosted a number of brilliant vision researchers from all parts of the world. The conference spanned two very busy days, and provided Henning Schulte with the option to present his work, next to many hours of intense talks and great networking opportunities. Among them, a special encounter between two MSCA ITNs: Current OptiVisT ESR Henning Schulte and former EGRET+ ESR Rijul Soans (UC Berkeley)!

Many thanks to Rijul Soans for being such good company and to Raul Rodriguez for the insightful lab tour. A fantastic event and a great success!

OptiVisT at Vision 2023 in Denver

The 14th edition of the biannual International Conference on Low Vision and Rehabilitation (VISION 2023) has welcomed OptiVisT with open arms! Situated in Denver, Colorado, it featured four days of intensive learning and exchange. Between 118 presentations and 65 posters, there was enough opportunity to meet vision researchers, clinicians and patient representatives from every continent (apart from Antarctica). Next to a festive dinner, the program included a visit at the Anchor Center for Blind Children. OptiVisT was represented in form of a panel on "Functional Vision across the Life Span" and individual presentations. Over the course of the conference, attendees were able to learn about research that involves four different Optivist projects, from alternative perimetry methods ( ESR1 , presented by Henning Schulte) and grasping assistance for the blind ( ESR10 , presented by Piper Powell) to the work on paralympic athletes ( ESR12 , presented by David Mann) and in children with brain tumors ( ESR15 , presented by Henning Schulte). Visio OptiVisT Vision 2023 in Denver was truly a major success!

Great scientific progress, a touching patient perspective, and enjoyable career discussions!

The fourth training event was held from Monday 12th - Wednesday 14th of June, 2023 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Monday 12/06

In the morning, the ESRs presented the impressive scientific progress they've made so far. We also met the recently recruited ESR10 for the first time in-person, finally!

In the afternoon, we had a guest lecture by prof. Antje Nuthmann on 'The relative importance of foveal and peripheral vision in naturalistic visual-cognitive tasks'. Furthermore, the Junior Board and Senior Board meetings took place.

Tuesday 13/06

In the morning, professor Line Kessel (Ophthalmology Department, Rigshospitalet) gave a talk on research in the pediatric population. After that we watched "All that remains to be seen", a Danish documentary that details the story of a blind mother and her seven year-old son whose own vision slowly starts to fade. After having watched this, the blind mother herself (Christina Nahnsen) came to share her touching story, giving us a real patient perspective of how it is to be blind.

In the afternoon, part 1 of the Grant Writing course took place. This course focussed on the EU MCSA Individual Fellowships. Particular information and personal experiences were shared by external speakers, and the ESRs practiced with writing a grant abstract.

Wednesday 14/06

The entire Wednesday was dedicated to Career planning. In particular, in the morning Christian Villum () moderated a session on "Early career planning: what's next?". We started with a panel discussion, during which three OptiVisT PIs shared their career journey. Two exercises followed. For Exercise 1 the group did a career role play with the use of Artificial Intelligence, based on fictional character your backgrounds. For Exercise 2, the ESRs worked with their own career objectives, with individual reflection and research and a plenary discussion of their own dreams and challenges.

In the afternoon, the Imposter Phenomenon was introduced and the ESRs gained insights into different performance patterns. The ESRs had the opportunity to share their personal experiences, specifically addressing instances of imposter phenomenon and insecurities

that have emerged during their PhD trajectories. Together, they've tried to identify ways to overcome these challenges.

ESR Peter Reddingius published a data set on eye-tracking with an accompanying manuscript

The data-set, provided by Peter Reddingius and his colleagues, includes eye tracking recordings of glaucoma patients (n=15) with pronounced asymmetrical vision loss (visual field loss worse in one eye), and clinical (visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and visual field) and demographic information (age, sex). The data, and accompanying manuscript " Data on eye movements of glaucoma patients with asymmetrical visual field loss during free viewing" , are published in the Data in Brief journal (May 2023) and is publicly available via the link below:

ESR Mehal Rathore published her first OptiVisT paper on measures of multiple deprivation and visual field loss in glaucoma clinics in England

In this paper, Mehal Rathore and her colleagues (CITY University London) studied large-scale visual field data from glaucoma clinics in England. In particular, they examined the association between multiple deprivation with late diagnosis and rapid worsening of glaucoma in patients in English hospital eye services (HES). Their findings show that glaucoma severity at presentation to English HES is associated with levels of multiple deprivation. Furthermore their results hints at equity of glaucoma care and outcomes once patients are in English HES.

First OptiVisT paper is out!

ESR Andrea Ghiani published his first OptiVisT paper on gaze behaviour during stair climbing

Stair climbing is a typical activity of daily life. In his paper, Ghiani and colleagues described gaze when walking up and down staircases paying attention to the representativeness of the environment where we usually perform this task. They found both differences and similarities compared to lab studies.

The third training event was held from Monday 7th - Thursday 10th of November, 2022 in Genoa, Italy.

Monday 07/11

This afternoon, the ESRs presented the impressive scientific progress they've made so far. We closed the day by a dinner at Ristorante Tre Merli, near the harbor of Genoa!

Tuesday 08/11

In the morning we visited the IIT-Erzelli where we learned about the projects of the Unit for Visually Impaired Persons and the Social cognition in human-robot interaction Lab. Furthermore, the Supervisory and Junior Board Meetings took place.

In the afternoon, in the context of career planning, experts from in and outside the consortium shared their career story followed by an Q&A session. In the late afternoon, a keynote lecture by Prof. Eli Peli (Harvard University) on the use of peripheral prism in vision rehabilitation was scheduled. In the evening, the consortium visited the Aquarium of Genoa.

Wednesday 09/11

In the morning of day three, the first part of the Advanced Training Symposium "From Solutions to Applications' ' took place. During this symposium, scientific experts from within and outside the consortium talked about how new functional vision tools can transform vision care. Invited speakers were: prof. Peter Bex (Northeastern University, USA), prof. Fabio Benfenati (Italian Institute of Technology, IT), and Luca Brayda (Nextage).

The afternoon was dedicated to the skills course “Gender in Science” by Lucia Martinelli, president of our training partner the European Platform of Women in Science.

We closed the day with a (rainy) tour through the historic center of Genoa.

Thursday 10/11

In the morning of day four, the second part of the Advanced Training Symposium took place. In the afternoon, more scientific communication skills were taught by Jacopo Pasotti. Amongst others, the ESRs practiced in concisely presenting an idea or project. In the late afternoon, a keynote lecture by Prof. Preeti (Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute) Vergeese on eye movement during visual search in Macular Degeneration was scheduled.

Last week, from 28th of August to 1st of September 2022, 5 ESRs have presented their work during the European Conference for Visual Perception, in Nijmegen.

Three posters:

Dilce Tanriverdi (UMCG) presented a poster entitled "Assessing peripheral crowding strength using a continuous eye movement paradigm"

Jannet Philip (VISIO) presented a poster entitled "Visual orienting responses in children with CVI due to different aetiologies"

Andrea Ghiani (VU) presented a poster entitled "Where do we look when walking on stair in the real world"

Two talks:

Both Peter Reddingius (CITY) and Henning Schulte (UMCG) both gave a talk during the symposium "Eyeballing the visual field: eye-tracking- and pupillometry-based alternatives for visual field assessment" , with talks entitled "What's on TV? Detecting visual field loss using natural eye movement scanpaths" and Detecting and reconstructing visual field defects from free-viewing eye movements" , respectively.

One award:

With his poster, Andrea Ghiani won the student's poster prize! The price was a 500€ award plus a free publication in the journal PeerJ and an interview on the PeerJ blog site. Big congratulations, Andrea!

An addition, there were talks by OptiVisT's Network Coordinator Frans. W. Cornelissen & Network Manager Hinke N. Halbertsma (UMCG).

Eye Movement Event Detection in Dynamic and Natural Conditions

A video by Ashkan Nejad , ESR at Royal Dutch Visio and board member of the Machine Learning Lab of DASH, the Data Science Center in Health of the UMCG.

Topic: It is a challenge for people with visual field disorders to perform everyday tasks that depend on a good visual overview. To help people with such a condition, an essential step is to quantify their gaze behaviour. However, there are no accurate gaze event detectors suitable for use in dynamic natural conditions, limiting research in such environments. In this project, Ashkan aims to design a gaze event detector for conditions where free head and body movements are possible.

Open PhD position – fMRI-analysis of the Visual System in Glaucoma at Univ. of Magdeburg, Germany

The Visual Processing Laboratory at the Department of Ophthalmology (University of Magdeburg) is seeking a PhD-candidate. The appointment will commence in autumn 2022.

You will be working on the project "fMRI-analysis of the visual system in glaucoma", which aims at an understanding of the interplay of plasticity and pathology in the human visual cortex. Topics will include the impact of physical training on visual cortex structure, function and connectivity. We are specifically interested in the functional specialization, interaction, and plasticity of areas of the visual cortex in patients with visual impairment. For this purpose, we use 3 Tesla as well as 7 Tesla high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate cortical sub-compartments.

The program offers outstanding students a unique opportunity to be trained as visual neuroscientists using cutting edge techniques and approaches. You will be part of an enthusiastic interdisciplinary research team, supervised by Professor Michael B. OptiVisT TRAINING EVENT 2 - GRONINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS

The first in-person OptiVisT workshop was a great success!

The second, but first in-person, training event was held from Monday 20th - Friday 25th of June, 2022 in Groningen, the Netherlands.

Monday 20/06

This afternoon was dedicated to the first part of the Mid-Term Check meeting. We met our EU Project Officer, presented the coordinators reports, and all ESRs presented themselves and their training and scientific progress. We closed the day by a dinner in the rooftop terrace of 'Forum', the cultural hotspot on Groningen. Here we also made the consortium picture on the right, with most PIs and ESRs in it and the Martini Tower in the background!

Tuesday 21/06

The morning was dedicated to the second part of the Mid-Term Check meeting. The Project Officer had one restricted session with the ESRs and one with the Project Coordinator. By the end of the morning, the meeting was closed with a general feedback session. In parallel, the PIs of the project participated in a second "Intervision for Supervisors" session led by our training partner Hertz, where the PIs shared challenging situations and experiences with the ultimate goal of advising and inspring each other.

In the afternoon, the Supervisory and Junior Board Meetings took place and the ESRs participated in the "Project and Time Management course I" again organised by our training partner Hertz (top left picture). During this course, the ESRs were guided in making a 3-year planning of their PhD projects, and were taught on how to management their time in order to stick to the plan.

In the later afternoon, a "secondment speed-dating" session was organised (bottom left picture) in the restaurant/bar 't Pakhuis . During this session, the ESRs speed-dated with beneficiaries or partners of their choice to establish a first contact and to see whether there was a potential match between the secondment wishes of the ESRs and what the secondment hosts could offer.

The day was closed with a dinner at the same location.

Wednesday 22/06

In the morning, the first part of the Advanced Training Symposium "From Insights to Solutions" took place. During this symposium, experts talked about how they combined insights in basic (vision/neural) mechanisms with technology (such as VR/AR or AI) to come up with solutions that are potentially useful in ophthalmology, optometry, and rehabilitation, for assessing, training or restoring functional vision. In the afternoon, the group visited the premises of our beneficiary Royal Dutch Visio (Haren). Here they were introduced to Visio's rehabilitation and research program and participated in demos on eye-tracking and VR, the light laboratory, the driving simulator and a visual impairment self-experience (top right picture).

To get from Visio to the dinner location, the group walked to lake Paterswoldsemeer and continued their journey by electric sloop (bottom right picture). The perfect activity for a sunny day! The day was closed with a buffet dinner at Meerwold, with a lake view.

Thursday 23/06

In the morning, the second part of the Advanced Training Symposium "From Insights to Solutions" took place. After this, the participants finally had some spear time. In the late afternoon, the group explored the beauty of Groningen by participating in the City Escape game, a AR implemented tour troughout the city (picture on the left). Congratulations to those who have escaped successfully!

For dinner, the group was introduced to a typical Dutch treat: unlimited pancakes at ' t Pannenkoekschip.

Friday 22/06

This whole day was dedicated to the Skills Course "Scientific Communication and Outreach part 2", at the Stadslab (Suikerunie Terrein) . This course was given by our consortium partner Nuver (former DAT collectief) and focussed on the importance of marketing and dissemination in science. Through a series of practical, the fellows gained experience in graphic design (by making a promo flyer for their study), copywriting (by writing a layman piece on their study) and videographics (by shooting and editing a video). All was done by basic and freely available tools.

With drinks and a dinner, the second OptiVisT workshop came to an end.

OptiVisT Workshop 1 - Magdeburg, Germany

From November 24th until november 26th, our ESRs participated in the first (online) OptiVisT Workshop.

During the workshop, the ESRs presented their projects, skills courses were taught on gender in science and on scientific communication and outreach and a -virtual- hands on course was organised on ophthalmology and electrophysiology.

On the last day, the symposium ‘From the Basics to new INSIGHTS: Structure, function, disorders of the vision and action systems’ was held, covering topics such as the visual system, patient views and digital ophthalmology.
